What is a vasectomy?

What a vasectomy does
A vasectomy is an operation carried out under local anaesthetic during which the vas - a piece of the tube which carries sperm from the testicle to the body - is removed. This prevents sperm produced in the testes from passing into the semen, thereby making the male infertile.
The testes and seminal glands remain untouched by this operation, therefore sexual feelings, erection and ejaculation should remain unchanged.
It is one of the most effective forms of contraception and is considered to be permanent. We advise that you give your decision careful consideration before you go ahead, as reversal operations are not always successful and are not always available on the NHS. We can offer you expert advice, talk you through the procedure and answer all your questions.
Is a vasectomy for you?
People usually ask for a vasectomy when they are sure their family is complete, when they do not want children or when alternative contraceptive methods are considered unsuitable.
Although you do not need a doctor's referral, it is vital to discuss your decision with your partner. We welcome your partner to attend the consultation with you so that we can answer any queries they may have.
You can also consult with your GP and get all the information beforehand.
